A stony silence now crept into their midst, making their journey simply unbearable. Even the fierce wind, which reigned over the great sea, was incapable of breaking through the barrier erected between the two souls. With a heavy heart, Darold's lifeless eyes darted from face to face. They were all glowing in the light of the bright sun. A joyful atmosphere prevailed in the park, but Darold's eyes remained cold and vacant. His eyes searched for refuge, hoping to fight back tears of frustration. As they walked past the giant oak tree, memories came flooding back.
Jemma felt a tremor run down her back, and she took a deep breath to steady herself. She looked at the tree and smiled weakly. A glimmer of light fell on her exhausted body, cleansing her mind with its peaceful melody. Their eyes met, and the two cherished the split second of unity in grief. The bond that they once shared had vanished; they knew that the end was imminent. The two souls had chosen to walk on this path, driven by a sense of destiny. Perhaps the destiny that awaited them was far greater than what their minds could behold. Could love exist in the midst of deep pain and sorrow?
"I don't love you anymore." These heartless words echoed in Darold's ears. He was overcome with disbelief first of all, then outrage. Jemma felt nervous under his intense gaze; it was almost too much to bear. She leant forward on the bench, her breath coming in short gasps. He bombarded her with questions, but there was no explanation that seemed to satisfy him. The words were like poison arrows, inflicting pain on anything that crossed its path. He tried to sit up, his eyes fixed on Jemma's face. At that moment, he found the love of his life strangely distant and impersonal. Their shoulders touched, yet their hearts were miles apart from each other's. The air was filled with the fresh scent of flowers, but it tasted bitter to them. "Why can't you just let go?" Jemma shouted, her mouth contorted by emotion.
They fell into long, brooding silences. The answer was so obvious. She knew that she would have to carry this burden of guilt all her life. Bitter pain seized her heart, tearing it to pieces effortlessly. "What has he done to deserve such a terrible fate?" she thought to herself. She put her hands to her cheeks, hoping to conceal the distress that she was feeling. There was a sudden stillness in the air. For a moment, they seemed detached from the reality that played before their eyes. People came and went, but the two of them were stranded in a timeless vault.
Sitting in the last glow of the sunset, they shivered with fatigue. This final moment marked the end of their journey together. As they hit the last note of the bitter-sweet song, the spark of their fiery dreams died and evolved into memories. Memories that would transcend time, telling of a love that knew no bounds. Jemma stood up and went on her way, leaving behind this extraordinary episode of her life. She didn't dare to turn back, afraid that even a moment of hesitation would cause her to stumble. Tears of relief were mixed with tears of sorrow. She could no longer distinguish the two.
The moment she broke his heart, she knew that hers could never be whole again.
